What an amazing industry the diesel engine and trucking business is. You never know who is going to call, stop in, what they know and what they are capable of.  About 1 month ago a gentlemen called me and mentioned he purchased an older Superliner Mack powered by a Big Cam 350 Cummins.  He knew nothing about the truck. However, he wanted it to run well and would work it at times, but the main use was to haul his 2 pulling Chevrolet pickup trucks to the truck pulls.  He then told me his 14-year-old daughter pulls one of them...

High performance trucks are a keepsake! Chuck Carlson of Western PA owns this beautiful 4300 IHC originally powered with a Big Cam III 400 horsepower Cummins engine. Once it was time for an in-chassis rebuild he brought it to our shop for an ultra high horsepower rebuild back in the late 1980’s. After disassembling the deck surface was cleaned, inspected for cracks, upper counter bores miked for liner protrusion and concentricity, and upper counter bores machines for .020 liner shims. We then installed new cam bearings, a high lift camshaft, and timed to a retarded setting. Always retard timing when...

Unusual phone calls from unusual people, or should I say unique people.  Bill McCammon from Emporia, Kansas called and was building a hot rod 1972 skinny windshield Peterbilt.  The skinny windshield Pete is 8inches lower than a 359 or 379 Peterbilt, thus the name skinny windshield.  Bill stated that the US Government ordered Peterbilt to quit building this style of truck because of the visibility out the windshield.  I remember Jay Bonanni of Volant, PA drove a skinny windshield Pete with a dropped sun visor and he had to keep the top of the hood clean to be able to...

Several years ago we thought the mechanical Big Cam Cummins and 425B Caterpillar engines would be gone by now, but they are not.  In fact, as of this writing we have six Big Cam Cummins engines being built by their owners. We are supplying the parts, specs, and knowledge for the clients to perform the build.  These are all performance engines and we have all the parts in stock.  We have the largest inventory of Big Cam Cummins parts in North America and Pat Sharp, Pete’s twin brother, is still rebuilding the fuel pumps, injectors, turbochargers, accessory drive assemblies, and...

A BLAST FROM THE PAST - Last week we had a 359 Pete in our shop with a Big Cam Cummins 700+ horsepower engine we built years ago. This engine had our High Lift Camshaft and MVT (mechanical variable timing) system so there is no smoke at idle and the timing retards at high power to increase the life of the pistons. The pistons are a high strength Cummins piston that were ceramic and Teflon coated, which we still do.  It also has our performance turbocharger and oversized gear pump on the fuel pump which measured 1.25 inches vs the...
