Lightweighting & Bad Fuel
If you’re looking for new ways to increase efficiency, one thing to keep in mind is the overall weight of the tractor. Lightweighting is a popular new trend fleets are using to increase fuel economy, but you can take advantage of leightweighting as well. Efficiency gained can be up to 0.5% to 0.6% for every 1,000 lbs. of weight reduction. If you manage to lose 4,000 pounds of weight, that’s a 2% MPG gain which is significant. Think of all the benefits of a lighter vehicle, less energy is needed to accelerate, brake, and change direction. In addition to using...
Cab Corrosion and DD15 Maintenance
Cab Corrosion: it’s winter again and our part of the country has seen no shortage of snow so far this year. When the season is over, we often find lasting damage in the form of corrosion on the cab floor of many trucks. Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are great at melting ice, but as you know they accelerate corrosion too. We’ve seen them rust both from the underside with salt spray, and from the top down with the salt that you track in on your shoes. Oftentimes mud, dirt, and other road debris combine with the salt and...
Stuntman Turned Owner Op & More
As we travel through life in this trucking industry, we have the opportunity to meet many very interesting people. The weekend of October 4-6, Pittsburgh Power had a booth at the “Made In America” trade show in Indianapolis, IN. Unfortunately, the show was low in attendance, but Pete, Debbie, Jane and I enjoyed spending time with our Max Mileage dealers Mike and Beth Thompson of Indianapolis. Many of you may recall, about three years ago, we built a DD4 Detroit engine in the convention center at the CMC, sponsored by Kevin and Leesa Rutherford, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mike Thompson,...
Liner Pitting, Dry Fuel & More
As many of you probably know, much of the aromatics, sulfur and paraffin have been removed from today’s diesel fuel and gasoline, making it much “drier” fuel than it used to be. To offset this change, Forrest Lucas of Lucas Oil, while recently speaking at a seminar in California, told me that I should be using the Lucas Fuel Conditioner in my gasoline engines and Harley Davidson. Now, I keep the small bottles of this product in the saddle bags of my bike and in the trunk of my car and use it whenever I fill up. The reason I’m...
